At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
