Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately called for greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, some conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
Yet a few are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a law requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of files that contained no new data.
