Seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
