The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
